October 16, 2025Tiankang Medical Rwanda Factory Welcomes UNICEF Special Audit, Fortifying Africa's Immunization Supply Chain
On October 15, 2025, the two-day Special Audit on Quality Management System conducted by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) at Tiankang Medical Rwanda Factory (TKMD RWANDA LTD) came to a successful conclusion. At the closing meeting, officials of the audit team formally announced that the factory's quality management system fully complies with international public procurement standards. It not only received high recognition but also obtained special recommendations for optimizing localized production in Africa, laying a solid foundation for its continuous service to global immunization programs.
This audit covered the entire production chain and was conducted in strict accordance with the eight quality standards jointly issued by WHO/UNICEF and the ISO 13485 Quality Management System. It focused on verifying core dimensions including evidence-based production practices, traceable information systems, and professional talent reserves. The audit team conducted a comprehensive assessment of the factory's auto-disable syringe production process through on-site inspections of production lines, review of quality records, and interviews with employees.
"Establishing such a high-standard quality system in Africa, a region with weak supply chains, is a model for China-Africa medical cooperation," the audit team commented. The team of Tiankang Medical Rwanda Factory responded that it will upgrade the system based on the audit recommendations and optimize the production structure to ensure both quality and output.
Currently, the 0.5ml auto-disable syringes produced by the factory have obtained WHO prequalification, with an annual production capacity of 300 million units. This capacity can meet 60% of the routine immunization needs in sub-Saharan Africa. Compared with imported products, the delivery cycle of these syringes is shortened by 80% and the price is reduced by 30%, effectively addressing the challenges of medical supply shortages in Africa.
As a core supplier of UNICEF for nearly a decade, the construction of Tiankang Medical Rwanda Factory has received financial and technical support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Its products have been included in the procurement list of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi), directly supporting vaccination efforts against hepatitis B, measles, and other diseases for African children. The successful passing of this audit further consolidates the factory's core position of "Made in Africa, Serving Africa" and adds a vivid practical case to the joint construction of the "Health Silk Road" by China and Africa.
